Hiking in La Palma

La Palma is one of the smaller Canary Islands, and offers fantastic hiking up the slopes that impress a lot of tourists. If you enjoy hiking in the mountains while on vacation in Tenerife, and have time for a day trip over to La Palma, this is highly recommended.

Fred Olsen has a ferry company that carries you between the islands, and the boats run from Los Christianos in the south of Tenerife to Santa Cruz de la Palma. The trip usually takes a little over two hours. It is also an opportunity to fly between the islands with the airline Binter Canarias. The flights depart from the Reina Sofia airport, outside of Los Christianos, and the trip takes about 30 minutes.

La Palma is a small island, located about 50 kilometers west of Tenerife. There is very little tourism, but the little that exists here is concentrated around the fiercely beautiful scenery, and the majestic mountains that you can experience in La Palma. Peak Roque de Los Muchachos is 2,426 meters high. Here you will find marked trails of more than 1,000 kilometers, suitable for all kinds of people from regular hikers to mountain climbers.

These trails are divided into 3 categories. There are 2 routes that it takes severals days to finish, Ruta de los Volcan and the Ruta de la Cresteria. For those who want to walk a whole day there are 38 different full-day routes and also 24 tracks in less than 10 kilometers. Everything is labeled and easy to follow.

If you want to spend more time on La Palma, there are not nearly as many hotels here that you will find in for example, Playa de las Americas in Tenerife. But the hotels Hotasa Costa Salinas and Sol La Palma Hotel can be higly recommended. Enjoy your visit to La Palma!
