Facts about Tenerife

Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands, over 2.000km2 and has nearly 900.000 inhabitants. The largest cities are: Santa Cruz de Tenerife, San Cristobal de La Laguna, Arona, La Orotava, Adeje, Los Realejos, Granadilla de Abona and Puerto de La Cruz. The capital Santa Cruz,  is also the capital of the other western Canary Islands of La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro. Approximately 5 million tourists visit Tenerife each year, mainly from countries in Northern Europe and Spain. These lands on one of the two airports on the island, Reina Sofia in the south, near the town of Los Christianos, or Los Rodeos in the north of La Laguna. The island also has a ferry-service to La Gomera from the port of Los Christianos, and to the other Canary Islands and the Spanish mainland from Santa Cruz. On Tenerife you can also visit the highest mountain in Spain with 3.718 meters, Mount Teide.

The climate in Tenerife is one of the best in the world. The island has an average temperature of about 22 degrees in winter and 27 degrees in summer. But it's a big difference between the north and the south of the island. While in the north it can be partly cloudy, in the south it's mostly clear skies and sunshine for most of the time. The worst month of the year if you think about the weather, could be december, where you can experience rain on the south side of the island, and also snow up on Mount Teide. In the summer it almost never rains, neither on the north or the south side of the island. The climate is one of the main reasons why so many tourists come to Tenerife every year.

The most popular destinations for tourists is located in the far south of the island. Playa de Las Americas and Los Christianos is located on the Costa Adeje. Another popular destination with a slightly different climate is located further north and is called Puerto de la Cruz. The south of Tenerife, have also many resorts designed for golfers with a variety of golf courses and hotels in the immediate vicinity there of. They are now trying to get more  golf tourists to come, and the new hotels being built is in the highest standards. Tourist authorities in Tenerife have seen that golf tourists staying in 5 star hotels, tend to leave more money on the island, and much of the development that is going on  now, is done with respect to these.
